Crisis 22 Patriot Day Memorial Ride

Crisis 22

There are many different organizations that promote awareness for the same causes. One in particular that I am referring to advocates veteran suicide prevention and awareness. This organization is Crisis 22. I had not been familiar with them before very recently. Being a huge supporter of Veterans and military based organizations and causes, I was looking for an event to be a part of during the weekend leading up to the anniversary of the catastrophic events of September 11, 2001.

I came across this one that the Tattered Souls MC was sponsoring. It was happening on Saturday September 9th, leaving from, and ending back up at a local Harley Davidson dealership, so I decided to check it out!

Crisis 22 is the organization that the proceeds from this run goes to. Their mission statement is as follows:

The CRISIS 22 Project stands with the men and women that have served our country, and to bring awareness to the alarming rate of suicides among those Heroes’.

We exist to bring their plight into the forefront to their families and friends. So, that they can recognize the warning signs of suicidal thoughts, and self-harm.

We exist to stand by our heroes’ in times where they may or may not be showing signs that they are possibly thinking of bringing a close to the chapters of their lives.

We stand to assist First Responders and our community as well.

We will provide our Veterans and hero’s by leading them to viable alternatives for assistance in managing the psychological aspects of possible self-harm.

I was very impressed with how well organized this run was. It was a pack style run that went to 3 different locations.

The first was The Healing Field in Tempe (a park that is transformed into a field of American Flags dedicated to those who lost their lives on 9-11-01).

The next stop was the Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza in downtown Phoenix. This is a park that is dedicated to memorializing prominent wars and events that have directly affected our state of Arizona. Wesley Bolin was one of the Governors in Arizona.

Then it was a stop at the 9-11 memorial erected in downtown Gilbert, which displays a beam from the World Trade Center, along with the names of those whose lives were lost. At each of these stops, a wreath was laid, and a bugler played Taps. It was very moving to say the least.

I got a chance to chat with Tattered Souls member Gregg Peterson. This is what he has to say:

"Our goals are like in our mission statement, to bring awareness, education and resources to try and stop the tragedy of an average of 22 Veterans who commit suicide everyday, this number is appalling. Also to work with Veterans and First Responders who suffer from PTSD. We are also working with local Police Departments who have our Crisis Hotline number (1-833-Stops22), if they run into a Veteran in crisis they call us and we respond. We are a boots on the ground organization and go out and help the Vets/ FirstResponders in crisis. The donations we take in go to providing the resources and education to continue or mission. No one in our organization takes any form of payment, it all goes back to resorces, as we are growing we will designate charities to make donations to who follow with our mission. We are actively looking for membership as our mission grows so does our need for the right people."

The end party had plenty of vendors and great food waiting for us. We also had live entertainment by the Blues Review Band.

It was an honor and a pleasure to ride with this group of individuals. This was a great ride for awareness and an opportunity to pause and reflect. Thank you, Tattered Souls MC for welcoming me along and for such a great event!
